Eph 1:3-14 ESV Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, (4) even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love (5) he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
(6) to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. (7) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, (8) which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight
(9) making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ (10) as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. (11) In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
(12) so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. (13) In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, (14) who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
There is such a wealth of riches in those verses, and of course one of my favourites is verse three.
Eph 1:3-14 ESV Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
This letter of Paul to the Ephesians has been called the “Epistle of In-ness,” because it is so full of the preposition in. We are in Christ, saints of God in flesh and blood, set apart for God. We are in Christ, and He is in us, and any goodness we have is due to our giving room and space to Him so he can fulfil his purpose in us. If we come to Christ thinking it’s about us, then we are in for a bit of a shock. Three times in this first chapter in Ephesians Paul says that disciples of Christ, those who have believed in Him, exist for one purpose, that is for the praise of his glorious grace. Everything we do is for the praise of his glorious grace.
We came here today not to get something from God, instead we came for the praise of His glorious grace that saved us from eternal destruction. We took part in the communion service today not because its some ritual we must perform to be saved, no, we did it for the praise of His glorious grace. As we gave of our finances today, we didn’t do it because we had to, we didn’t so we would get from God as if He was some sort of slot machine, no, we gave so it would be to the praise of His glorious grace.
2Co 9:7-8 ESV (7) Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (8) And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
As we give to God in this manner, not reluctantly, not under compulsion, not feeling as if we must give, but as we have already decided and with a cheerful heart, as we give in this manner, the scriptures say that God is able to make all grace abound to us, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, we may abound in every good work. This means that as we give under those conditions, God Himself will ensure that we have more than enough in every area of our lives, and at all times in our lives, and that we will be able to abound, to overflow, in every good work. The result of giving cheerfully, as you have decided beforehand, not reluctantly, or under compulsion, according to the next verse, is that -
2Co 9:11 ESV You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.
The result is that your giving will produce thanksgiving to God, showing again that even your giving is for the praise of the glorious grace of God.
We are not really poorer by what we give away; and God will never starve those who give to Him. Note the fullness of this verse. God’s grace is like an ocean at full tide. Count the alls: all grace, always, all sufficiency, every good work, and twice the verb ‘abound’, meaning to overflow. When you are going forth to sow, ask God to give you the seed. If after sowing you are hungry, ask God to supply you with bread. When you are discouraged at the results, ask God to increase the fruit. We sow the seed, whether of the gospel, or of the finances to aid its circulation, and praise the Lord, we reap a harvest of thanksgiving to God. But who can ever measure the thanks and love which are due to God for having given the Gift of His Son, the gift that includes all gifts?
Our giving to God is for the praise of His glorious grace, our service is for the praise of His glorious grace, our very lives are for the praise of His glorious grace.
Paul opens verse three by declaring “blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”. As he is blessed, and as we are in Christ, we too are blessed, even if our lives are for the praise of His glorious grace. In Christ you cannot help but to be blessed, in the same way that if you jumped into the river this morning you could not help but be wet. In Christ we are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies.
To be in the heavenlies, means to live a spiritual life and to draw our reinforcements from the unseen and eternal world, which is focused on and in our Lord Jesus Christ. We are in Him, so far as justification is concerned - that is our standing; if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead you are justified and are fully included in Christ. Not alone are we in him for justification, but he is in us for sanctification - that is the source of a holy and useful life. The condition of a blessed life is the conscious maintenance of this oneness, the conscious development of this relationship, Christ in me the hope of glory, and I in Him the hope of eternal life.
Eph 1 4_6 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love (5) he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, (6) to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
The source of all we are, and have, and hope to be, so far as salvation is concerned, is the will of God for us; but the stream flows to us through our Lord Jesus Christ, and the end to which all things are moving is the summing-up of all in Christ. As He is the Alpha, so He is the Omega. We were chosen in Christ before the world was even formed, chosen to be holy and blameless before him. His original plan was to adopt us into his family as sons and daughters through his one and only begotten Son Jesus, and this was according to his will and purpose, and of course, to the praise of his glorious grace with which he has blessed us in the Beloved, that is in Christ.
Eph 1 7_10 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, (8) which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight
(9) making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ (10) as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
In our union with Christ, we are already blessed in so many ways. We see here the blessing of redemption through the blood of Christ. To be redeemed means to be ransomed in full. The only ones who need to be ransomed are those who are in captivity, and oh boy were we in captivity. We were in captivity to our sin and locked away forever with no hope, without God in our world, but at the right time, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us, the ungodly, to set us free from the burden of sin. He ransomed us in full by his blood.
As well as paying for our ransom to set us free, he has forgiven us all our trespasses, all our sins, completely, and has decided not to record them anymore. Now that’s what I call good news, and that good news is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Are you glad for Jesus? He redeemed us and forgave us, and remembers our sins no more, according to the riches of his grace, which he showered upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ. He set forth his purpose in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, and that plan is so he can unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. This is our future hope, thanks be to God.
Eph 1 11_14 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, (12) so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
(13) In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, (14) who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
At this moment in time, we are blessed with all the spiritual blessings in the heavenly places. We are ransomed in full, forgiven, in Christ made holy and blameless before God. That’s the here and now. We also have an inheritance that we will receive in the fullness of time. God works everything according to the purpose of His will, so that we who have our hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. When we first heard the word of truth, the gospel, and believed in Christ, we were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. God deposited the Holy Spirit in us, and this seal of the Holy Spirit is the deposit that guarantees our inheritance.
There is no way to measure the sealing of the Holy Spirit, because it means that we are stamped with the likeness of Christ and so kept unspoiled among all the ups and downs of life. His seal ensures that our inheritance is guaranteed until we come into possession of it in the next life, to the praise of his glory.
Its not about you, it’s all about Jesus, for his glory and for his fame. Its not about you or about me, its not about us trying to twist God’s arm to do things our way. There is a simple theology, God good devil bad, but we can add, God is God I am not. He is God and there is no other, and all my life is for the praise of His glorious grace.
On this the first Sunday of December as we begin to see the rush and panic of Christmas begin to take hold, lets remember, its not about the presents under the tree, its about the presence of the one who hung on the tree to ransom us sinners, to give us forgiveness of sins. To seal us with the promised Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our future inheritance, and to remind us of our present hope in Christ.
We have been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, that we might be to the praise of his glory. You are special, very special indeed, but its not about you, it’s all about Jesus.
