Jesus lived a fearless life here on the earth, facing every situation He encountered with boldness. However, living fearlessly does not mean that you never feel fear in your heart. What it does mean is that when you’re tempted to worry about something, you look to Jesus and receive His grace to empower you to trust Him instead. Whenever you are tempted to fear, you are believing something that is not true, something about yourself, something about someone else or something about God. When you are tempted to fear, you must go to God and ask him what is the lie you are believing and ask him to show you the truth.
Its much like a young child who comes into the parent’s room in the middle of the night afraid of the monster under the bed. The child has believed a lie, so the parent takes him back to the room and shines a torch back under the bed and assures him there is nothing to fear. The child is then tucked into bed with the assurance that the parents are right next door. The child had believed the lie, had come to the parents for protection and the parent showed them the truth. It’s the same with us when we are tempted to live in fear. We go to God for protection, and we tell him what’s worrying us. He shines a light in the darkness and tells us that there is nothing to fear. Then he assures us that he is right there with us, and nothing can harm us. Jesus can do this because he knows what its like to be tempted to be afraid.
The Bible tells us that Jesus was tempted in every way that we are. He understands what it feels like to be tempted to be afraid; but He also showed us that the way to freedom is through union and communion with the Father. Just like us, He went to the throne of grace to receive the strength He needed to overcome the temptation. We can see His example to us very clearly in Mark 14:32-34:
Mar 14 32_34 ESV And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” (33) And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. (34) And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”
Jesus was tempted to be afraid. The Scriptures say His heart was stricken with distress, and intensely troubled and saddened, sorrowful even unto death. Just like any human, He felt distressed and deeply troubled. Knowing that Jesus felt the same way we all can feel at times encourages us and endears Him to our heart. Have you ever shared your heart with a good friend and were comforted realizing they felt the same way that you did? Jesus is your best friend, and He can relate to the negative emotions your heart feels because He was tempted in the same ways that you are. He sympathizes with you. He truly understands what it feels like to be afraid, to the point of sweating great drops of blood.
Luk 22 44 ESV And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Jesus felt the agony of the pain and suffering that lay ahead of him, but his heart was set free through his union and communion with His Father.
Mar 14:35-36 ESV And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. (36) And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
Jesus opened His heart and shared His fear with His Father. He was honest with Him about how He felt. Then He said, “Abba Father, not what I will, but what you will.” He acknowledged His fear but was willing to trust His Father completely because He knew His Father loved Him.
Mar 14:37 ESV And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?
If Jesus was tempted in every way that you are, how do you think Jesus felt when He realised that His friends had let Him down?
Mar 14:38 ESV Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Again, we see Jesus sharing the secret to living a life free from sin. Prayer is not something we do just before we eat or for ten minutes in the morning during our devotional time. Prayer is a lifestyle of constant fellowship with God the Father and God the Son. It’s not a religious duty, it’s an intimate relationship with the One Who loves us and meets all the needs of our heart. When we live in intimacy with Jesus, inviting Him into every facet of our hearts by sharing our fears, frustrations, doubts, and struggles with Him, He empowers us with His grace. In our weakness, He makes us strong (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Mar 14 39_41 ESV And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. (40) And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. (41) And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Jesus knew where to go when he was tempted. He ran to His Father who loved Him. He knew that it was only through His union and communion with His Father that He would receive the strength He needed to carry out the Father’s plan for His life. Although He went into the garden of Gethsemane feeling fearful, sad and alone, He came out empowered by the Holy Spirit. He was able to face His accusers fearlessly and fulfil the Father’s plan for His life because His heart was filled with His Father’s love.
Heb 12 2 ESV looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Amplified version
Hebrews 12:2:2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God. AMP
The Bible tells us that for the joy of obtaining the prize that was set before Him, Jesus endured the cross. Yes, His prize was being seated in the highest place of Honor at the right hand of the Father, but you must remember he was there before he gave it all up to come to earth. The prize was not only to be seated in glory at God’s right hand, but making it possible for us to be seated there in Him. You and I are His prize, His treasured possession, and He wanted to be one with us.
The Bible tells us that for the joy of obtaining the prize that was set before Him, Jesus endured the cross. His prize was being seated in the highest place of honor at the right hand of the Father and making it possible for us to be seated in Him. You and I are His prize, His treasured possession, and He wanted to be one with us.
Joh 17:24 ESV Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Eph 2 4_6 ESV But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, (5) even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— (6) and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Wow! It was the desire of Jesus’ heart that we would sit with Him in the highest place of Honour. What love He demonstrated toward us to go through such agony and grief in order to give us such a priceless gift. He made it possible for all of us to live free from fear by bringing us into that same intimate relationship with Him and the Father. Jesus was able to go to the cross fearlessly because He knew His Father’s promise and was secure in His Father’s love. In John 17:24 He said, “Father… You have loved me before the foundation of the world.”
Whenever you are faced with the temptation to fear or to worry, follow the example of Jesus and simply pray,
“Father, I know You love me because of the promises You have given me in Christ, and because of this I can rest in your great love!”
When you do, then you too can live free from fear by living in the same relationship with the Father that Jesus did. Living in the same position with the Father as Jesus is, realising that as you have been given to Jesus by the Father, you are with Him where He is, gazing on His beauty and His glory. Take the fears, frustrations, worries, concerns, and struggles of your heart to God your heavenly Father. Live conscious of His love for you. Live in constant union and communion with Him, and as you do, watch as the Holy Spirit empowers you to live fearlessly in the love of the Father, right here and now this world, in the love.
