Roaming through Romans Chapter 13 – Cont’d
Last week we looked at part of this chapter and we saw that God’s word gives instruct us to be subject to the governing authorities.” The reason being that all authority is ordained by God and anyone who resists the authority that God has put in place will incur judgment. We are to be subject to authority in order to avoid judgment, but also for that sale of consciences.
If we allow our consciences to become defiled by disobedience, rebellion and sin, then we are in danger of shipwrecking our faith. We maintain faith and a good conscience by trusting in the blood of Jesus to purge our consciences from dead works, and by recognising it when we have done wrong, thanking God for forgiveness and cleansing, and then turning from wrongdoing to doing what is right, by the grace of God.
Rom 13:5-7 ESV Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. (6) For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
Not many like the tax man, but in all fairness, I have found him to be very reasonable. If you are upfront with the taxman, he is very fair. In order to avoid God’s wrath and for the sake of conscience we are to pay the taxman what is due to him, for even he, or she, is a minister of God, who attends to the service of taxation.
On many occasions the Pharisees came to Jesus to see if they could catch him out, one of those occasions is recorded in Mark’s gospel chapter twelve.
Mar 12:13-17 ESV And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. (14) And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?”
(15) But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” (16) And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” (17) Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.
Caesar was the taxman in the day, and the instruction from Jesus was, give to the taxman what belongs to him and give to God what belongs to him. Now you may be a generous giver and have no problem giving to God, but if you are not paying the taxes that you owe then you are in rebellion against the government that has been appointed by God. Owe no one anything says the Lord, pay your taxes, pay your revenue or levies, pay respect to those who you owe respect to, pay honour to those you owe honour to.
Now we come to the part that teaches us how to fulfil the law of God through love, which is the currency of the kingdom.
Rom 13: (8) Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. (9) For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
When Jesus said that the two greatest commandments were to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself, what he meant was this. If you love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, then you won’t even dream of having any other gods before him, you won’t worship images or statues or any other man-made idol of worship, you won’t take the name of the Lord in vain, and you will keep holy the Lord’s day, and as every day is the Lord’s day, that means you will keep every day holy to the Lord. So, when you love the Lord your God, then you will automatically keep the first four of God’s Ten Commandments.
When you love your neighbour as yourself, meaning that you will love all mankind as yourself, you wouldn’t even think about dishonouring your parents, you wouldn’t kill another human being, someone made in God’s image and likeness, you wouldn’t dream of having an affair with the wife or husband of another. When you have faith to believe that God provides everything you need, why would you steal form someone else, including the taxman. When you love your neighbour as yourself, would you lie, would you covet someone’s wife or husband, or someone else’s property? The answer is no. So, when you love your neighbour was yourself, you will have no difficulty with he remaining six of God’s commandments.
Owe no one anything except to love each other, for the last six commandments are summed up in this word; “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On those two commandments, love God and love your neighbour, Jesus said that all the law and the commandments hang. This is how the law of God is fulfilled, by love.
Rom 13:11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
We hear a lot today about being woke, but here is a different call to wokeness, if that’s a word. Paul goes on to say that besides all this, you know the time we live in, and its time for you to wake up. You may not be aware, but salvation is nearer now that when we first believed. He wasn’t talking about the Christians in Rome being saved from the ruthless evil empire they were under; he was talking about the complete enjoyment of their salvation in heaven. Jesus talked a lot about the day of his second coming being close to hand. He repeated it many times in order to keep believers always in an attitude of being awake and expecting his return at any time. Now while scripture speaks in many places of the soon return of Christ, there is never any reference to an actual date or how near or far this day is. The message is always to be on the alert, be watchful, be woke to the day we are living in, for salvation is indeed nearer to us now than when we first believed.
Paul continues
Rom 13:12-14 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. (13) Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. (14) But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
If we are aware of the time we are living in, we too must cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, the armour of God. Let us walk properly as in the daytime. There was song that once recorded by C&W star Charlie Pride called, ‘The Snakes crawl at night.’
All the snakes crawl at night, that's what they say
When the sun goes down, then the snakes will play
As followers of Jesus, we at not people of the night but people of the day. We are commanded to walk properly, not in orgies, not in drunkenness, not in sexual immorality, and sensuality, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, we are to put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Whenever we are tempted to resist the authority God has put in place, we are to turn Christ so that we do not satisfy that fleshly desire. If we are tempted to cheat on our taxes or not pay our taxes, we are to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires.
Anytime we are about do something that would be contrary to showing love to God or our neighbour, we must refuse to gratify our flesh, but turn to Christ so that we can fulfil the law of God with love.
Rom 13:11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
