For the past two years we have lived with the threat of a deadly virus, not knowing how or when it would affect us, or in what way. For some, there was the added threat of losing jobs, businesses failing, and the fear of not being able to survive. Then, just as government announces the end of lockdown and what seems to be the first sign of light at the end of this very long tunnel, we hear the disastrous news of war in Europe, and soon realise that this too will cost us even though we are thousands of miles away. With prices reaching levels that we have not seen before, fear slowly creeps in with questions like, will I have enough to survive, will I be able to pay my mortgage, will I be able to survive.
And of course, like the last two years, the ones who fear the most are the ones who listen to the daily news the most. But God. In first Chronicles chapter twelve, where the mighty men of David are recorded, in verse thirty-two we see mention of men of Issachar.
1Ch 12:32 ESV Of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command.
The 200 leaders from the tribe of Issachar "understood the signs of the times." As a result, their knowledge and judgment provided needed help in making decisions for the nation. Today, the job of the leader is to prepare his or her people for what is happening in the world, and to know how and what to do. How then is God’s word relevant for the world we live in today.
As a church we are so thankful to Tom and Heather for giving their home to host our worship services. Last week Heather brought a powerful message entitled Back to Basics. In it she taught that as individuals we are being called to strip away everything until it’s just us and God, and as a church he is asking us to come together WITH Him, just us and Daddy. It’s true that at times we can get so involved in the practicalities of being a Christian, ticking all the right the boxes - read my Bible today, prayed for the lost today, attended church this week, paid my tithes, helped my neighbour - and while all this is going on, God is waiting patiently for some quality time with us.
Getting back to basics, according to Heather’s message is about spending time with Father God, because it’s the best time of all. When we spend time with Him, He changes us from the inside out. Jesus said that as we come to him in our weary state, he restores us. So, what does the Word of God say to us today, in the troubled times we live in.
Mat 11:25-30 ESV At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; (26) yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. (27) All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the
Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. (28) Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”…
No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. The fact that we know the Father today is because Jesus has revealed Him to us. And Jesus can only reveal the heart of the Father to us when we come to him for this revelation. The knowledge of God the Father and the mysteries of grace can only be found when we come to Jesus. It was Jesus who said, “I am the way the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except by me.” Jesus warmly invites and encourages us to come to him for all the things we need for life and godliness; all things we need for peace, comfort, happiness, and salvation are to be found in his hands alone. And as we come to him, he reveals the Father’s heart.
He calls us to him, and the promise is that we will be given rest as we become yoked to Christ.
A yoke was a heavy wooden harness that fitted over the shoulders of an ox or oxen. It was attached to a piece of equipment the oxen would pull. We may be carrying heavy burdens of (1) sin, (2) the demands of life (3) oppression and persecution, or (4) weariness in the search for God.
Jesus frees people from all these burdens. The rest that Jesus promises is love, healing, and peace with God. A relationship with God changes meaningless, wearisome toil into spiritual productivity and purpose.
As we come to him, as we learn from him, as we learn from his gentle and humble heart, he promises that we will find rest for our souls, for, says Christ, my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. This is the opposite of what is happening right now in the world. The burden on people to simply live has become extremely heavy in recent times. In budget 2022, the minister for finance announced an increase in fuel prices.
Minister Donohoe said the action was necessary as "the world is burning, and people will not tolerate Governments' inaction on climate crisis."
Of course, when fuel prices increase, everything else increases as well because everything we buy is dependent on being delivered by fuel-driven transport. In February, fuel saw another increase as a result of the war in the Ukraine. This has resulted in families and individuals having to deal with the extra burden of the rising cost of living, electricity goes up, gas goes up, home heating, food, and the list goes on and on, and so does the added stress and pressure that goes with it. This is why we must not lose sight of the word of God when he invites us to come to him, and we must believe that as we do, he will give us rest. As we learn from him, we will find that his yoke is easy, and his burden is light.
If we continue to try to make it on our own, we won’t be at rest, we will find that we are weak and heavy laden. We cannot survive without him. As we come to Him, he reveals the heart of our good, good Father who loved us so much that he gave his only begotten Son to die for us, and if God gave his only Son, will he hold anything back. Of course, the answer is no, but we won’t see the goodness of God our heavenly Father unless we first believe it, and we cannot believe it unless Christ reveals it to us, and he cannot reveal it to us unless we come to him and rest in him.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”…
We get rest only when we come to him. When we come to him, we must be prepared to lay down our own burdens, we must allow him to take the yoke of worry, of anxiety, of fear for the future off our shoulders in preparation for the taking on of his yoke of righteousness, of peace, of joy in the Holy Ghost. We come to Him to learn from him, and as we do we will learn his gentleness and his humility. This is the means that God has provided so that we can find rest for our souls. For, said Jesus, my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
This is the only way to ride out this storm, and if we don’t learn to ride this one, we won’t be able to ride the nest one, and you can be sure there will be a next one.
