Why do we attend church services?
The purpose of coming together as the people of God is outlined in Hebrews chapter ten. The author of the Book of Hebrews teaches about the confidence that we have as believers to enter that holy place, the very presence of God, by the blood of Jesus. He calls this the new and living way that Jesus opened for us by removing the partition that was between God and man through his body on the cross when God reconciled us to Himself in Christ. Now Jesus is our great high priest over the house of God, and because he is, we are encouraged to come near to God with a true heart in full assurance of faith. We can come with true hearts because our hearts have been washed clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with water. This is the confession of our hope, and we are to hold to it, and we are not to waver from it, because it was God Himself who promised it, and he is faithful. Then we read in Hebrews chapter ten and verse twenty-four.
Heb 10:24-25 ESV And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, (25) not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
We are to be concerned with stirring up of each other to love and good works. To love one another is part of the commandment that Jesus gave in John’s first letter.
1John 3:23-24 ESV And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. (24) Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
Believe in the name of God’s Son Jesus Christ and love one another. Once we believe in the Son of God, we have eternal life, and when we love one another, God promises that we abide or remain in God and God in us. When we come together as people who love God, we come in obedience to his call, we come to worship him as his body, and we come to stir one another up to love and good works. We come to hear His Word being preached and taught, and this is a most important part of being a disciple of Jesus. God in his wisdom gave us all things for life and godliness, and one of things we need for life and godliness are teachers who will bring us into the truth of god’s Word.
Eph 4:8 ESV Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”
Eph 4:11-16 ESV And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, (12) to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, (13) until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
(14) so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. (15) Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, (16) from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
According to this passage. to this church, as you pastor, as your shepherd, I am given to you as a gift from God, …. as are evangelists, prophets, and others.
Let’s take a look at the reasons that Jesus gave the gift of a pastor or shepherd.
1. Why did Jesus give those gifts?
Eph 4:12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
To teach you how to operate in your God-given calling. As the people of God, we are to gather as one body yes, but we are all individuals, and God the Holy Spirit has given each Christian special gifts for building up the church. All our gifts are important for the building project. Like the construction of a building, all the workers are important, from the architect who designed the building to the least unskilled worker. One of the lowest paid workers on a building site is the person mixing the concrete that’s needed to hold the blocks together, and yet the architect, who is one of the highest paid workers, depends on the person who mixes the concrete or there won’t be a building.
I say this so we can get the idea that no matter what it is that we are called to do in the kingdom of God and for the building of His church, no job is meaningless, or less important than another. Everyone’s gifts are needed, or the building will not progress. If the labour who mixers the concrete didn’t do his job the building would be at a standstill. We all know we have gifts from God for his work, it is important that we use them. If you know what they are, look for opportunities to use them. If you don’t know, ask God to show you, talk to others, to your leaders. We are all here to help each other walk in God’s plan for our lives, and as leaders we are here to equip you for the work of the ministry so you can use your gifts to strengthen and encourage the church.
2. What is the goal of this equipping of the believers or saints
Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
You are being equipped to bring you to the unity of the faith. Jesus gave the church the responsibility of making disciples of all nations as we read in Matthew chapter twenty-eight.
Mat 28:18-20 ESV And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Part of this command was the responsibility to teach others to observe all things that Christ commanded them. These things are written down for us, and these are the things that we as pastors and teachers are to teach. Christ Himself promised that he would be with us always as we teach, right up until the end of the age.
The purpose of teaching and equipping is to attain the unity of the faith, Earlier Ephesians chapter four, the writer Paul says regarding faith, that there is but one.
Eph 4:4-6 ESV There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— (5) one Lord, one faith, one baptism, (6) one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
According to Strong’s Bible Concordance, the word faith used here in the Greek means the persuasion or moral conviction of the truth or truthfulness of God as a teacher, and his Word as the textbook, and especially the reliance upon Christ for salvation so much so that there is a constant profession of this persuasion and reliance. Unity of the faith can be summed up as follows; believing that God is our teacher, his Word is the Textbook, reliance on Christ for salvation is the subject lesson, and proclaiming this teaching before others is the homework.
Eph 4:13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God,…
The knowledge of the Son of God is another way of saying faith in Christ, as faith is the spiritual knowledge of Christ. This knowledge of course is contained in the writhing of scripture. However, this is more than knowing about Jesus, it is knowing why God was made known to man in the flesh, and why this was necessary in order to purchase salvation.
This unity of the faith and unity of the knowledge of the Son of God is the path to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. The next verse highlights the importance of this equipping of the saints by pointing out what happens when we are not equipped, or when we refuse to be equipped.
Eph 4:14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
If you are not being equipped for the works of ministry, or if you refuse to be in the place where you can be equipped, then you are still a child as regards your faith, you are still immature in your Christian walk. When you refuse to be in the place where you can constantly be brought more and more into the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the fullness of the stature of Christ, then you leave yourself in danger of being tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by every cunning person, by craftiness and deceitful schemes.
We refuse to allow ourselves to be equipped for the work of God when we neglect the assembling together of each other. This is why it is so important to do all in our power to be with the church when we come together, at all times. I know we are not yet in a position to come together at our Wednesday night Bible studies, but we have been online for eighteen months, and I know some of you are not availing of this when you could. Wednesday night Bible studies are not some optional extra just to keep the pastor busy, or for something to do during the week. They are an integral part of the equipping of the saints for works of the ministry and ought not to be neglected. If you only attend the Sunday service, then you are only availing of half of the lessons you need to walk in faith and in the knowledge of God. We hope to resume our in-person Bible studies on twenty-seventh of October by the grace of God, and make a plan to be there, in person.
If you could attend to your religious duty but don’t, then you are being tossed to and fro by the waves and by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning and craftiness in deceitful schemes. This is not God’s plan for our life and if we think we can live in a constant state of ignoring God’s plans without any harmful side effects, we are fooling ourselves and ignoring our conscience. Its not that God will condemn you or love you any less, it’s not that you will lose your eternal hope, but your hearts will condemn you and rob you of your confidence.
In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, Paul said that we are to hold faith and a good conscience. To neglect to do so is to shipwreck our faith. When we hear the word ‘shipwreck’ we get the picture of a ship being destroyed in a storm. The ship set off on a journey, but it never arrived at its destination. Likewise, we not only need to start out in faith, but we must also maintain faith until it brings us to the desired result. To know God’s will and to fail or refuse to do it defiles our conscience and will cause our faith to be shipwrecked, and we will never reach unity in faith and the knowledge of the Son of God.
On the other hand, when we are in that place where we can avail of the gift that Jesus has given, where we can be equipped for works of ministry, instead of being tossed to and fro by people and teachings that are contrary to the truth, Pauls assures us -
Ep[h 4:15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, (16) from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Which is the very opposite of being tossed to and fro by the waves and carried by every contrary doctrine. When we are allowing ourselves to be equipped for works of ministry, works of God; as we speak the truth in love, we are to grow into Christ who is the head, and as we do, as we remain connected in faith, in the knowledge of the Son of God, we are joined and held together by every joint by which it is equipped. This is referring to others, to our fellow brothers and sisters. They are the joints that hold the body together, when each part is working properly, and as we grow up into Christ in this way, we, with all the other parts, He makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
This is the end goal; this is the destination to which we are called. This is where our ship is to anchor. Let us do nothing to cause a shipwreck. Let us strive to reach the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God. May we always be fully persuaded and morally convicted of the truth and truthfulness of God as our teacher, of his Word as the Textbook, of the reliance on Christ for our salvation as the subject lesson, and of the profession of these truths as our homework. That’s your part, my part is to provide the means for you to be equipped.
Decide today that you will be there when we meet, so we can all stir each other up to love and good works. Decide that you will not neglect the coming together of the church as is the habit of some, but instead you will be there when we meet to encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day of the Lord drawing nearer and nearer.
