Mat 14:13-21 ESV Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. (14) When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. (15) Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
(16) But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” (17) They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” (18) And he said, “Bring them here to me.” (19) Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he
looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. (20) And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. (21) And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Just prior to this Jesus had heard the news that his cousin and forerunner John the Baptist had been beheaded by the evil ruler Herod. At once Jesus went in a boat to a desolate place to be alone. However, the crowds heard about it, and they followed him on foot. When Jesus reached the place where he was going and went ashore, he saw the crowds of people and being Jesus, he immediately forgot about himself, had compassion on the people and healed their sick. He continued to pray for them until the evening came. His disciples were concerned for the people as it was late, and they were in a desolate place. There was no McDonalds or Supermacs nearby, so they asked Jesus to send the crowds away to go into the villages so they could buy food for themselves.
Jesus knew their needs, not just the need for healing but for all their needs, but I imagine he was delighted when the disciples showed concern as well. What he said next must have surprised his disciples.
Mat 14 16 ESV But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”
The disciples informed Jesus that they had only five loaves and two fish, thinking that would be the end of the discussion, but Jesus had other plans
“Bring them here to me.”
I suppose they had witnessed enough of the unusual requests that Jesus made and would have brought the five loaves and two fish to him without question. The five loaves were not five of O’Hara’s breakfast sliced pans, but more like small bread rolls, so not much when you consider that the crowds numbered about twenty thousand, including women and children. Jesus ordered them to sit down on the grass as he took the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to give them to the crowds. Everyone there ate until they were satisfied, and when they had finished, the broken pieces that were left over filled twelve baskets. We don’t know what size those basked were, but the fact that there were full baskets left over means that not one of the twenty thousand people went away hungry.
What a miracle, and there’s so much for us to learn from all this. First of all, no matter how busy you may think the Jesus is, or what is going on with him, when you come to him, when you seek him, you will find that he will always have compassion on you and is always more than willing to heal your sickness and provide for you in every way.
Secondly, when, like the disciples, you have concern for the care and welfare of others, that’s when you will see the real miracles take place. When you come to Jesus on behalf of others you never know what he will do for you. You may well believe that the resources you have are not enough to meet your own needs, let alone the needs of others, yet when the disciples gave what they had to Jesus, the miracle took place, but only because they first put what they had in the hands of Jesus.
No matter how great the need, and no matter how small the provision, when you give it into the hands of Jesus it becomes blessed, and he multiplies it. Notice also when Jesus took the bread and blessed it, he broke it and gave it back to the disciples, and it was only as they gave it out that the miracles of multiplication tool place. Its only when you put what you have into the hands of Jesus that it becomes blessed. How could a handful of disciples feed twenty thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish, which was probably only enough for two or three people, unless it had been blessed by God. Paul taught a powerful lesson on this in his second letter to the Corinthians.
2Co 9:6-12 ESV The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. (7) Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (8) And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
(9) As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” (10) He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
(11) You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. (12) For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.
When you take the little you have and give it to God something happens in the spiritual realm. As you give to God, cheerfully, not begrudgingly, because God loves a cheerful giver, it is God Himself how makes all grace abound to you. Because he is able to make all grace abound to you, God promises that he will increase your worldly substance, he will increase what you have so that you will have more than enough for you and your family, but more than that, he will increase you in all things at all times so that you may abound in every good work. As he does, it will be said of you -
“He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
Whose righteousness endures forever, God’s righteousness in you; and who has distributed freely, who has given to the poor, God has because he is the one who gave you the seed. He is the one who supplies seed to the Sower and bread for food, and he promises to supply and multiply your seed for sowing and to increase the harvest of your righteousness.
What would have happened if the disciples had refused to give Jesus the food they had. The crowd would not have been fed, the miracle would not have been seen and God would not have been glorified. God supplies all we need for life and godliness. He supplies all our needs. Included in our supply is his seed which makes up ten percent of what he gives us. This is his seed, and this seed is sacred. Sometimes we eat the seed as well as the bread. When we do this, we cannot expect to have a harvest of anything. When we obediently give to God the seed he has given us to sow, then God can supply and multiply that seed for sowing, and he can increase the harvest of our righteousness.
God also promises that when we sow the seed he give us, we will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way. This generosity through us will produce a harvest of thanksgiving to God and this is what it is all about.
When you give to God, not only will you be enriched in every way, and not only will this produce a harvest of thanksgiving to God, but this service of giving, the ministry of this service not only supplies the needs of the others, but it is overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.
I know we are a giving church, and I also know that there are some who give more generally than others. Having said that, I know there are those have been eating the seed God has given as well as the bread. So, I ask you today to make a decision today to stop. We pay our taxes because that’s the law of the land but remember that Jesus also commanded us give to God what belongs to God. The seed is not yours, so don’t rob God, give it to him, and watch as he multiplies your seed for sowing and increases the harvest of your righteousness. God promises to enrich you in every way to be generous in every way, which will produce thanksgiving to God.
You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.
Today as you have given the seed back to God, as you have placed your loaves and fishes on the hands of God, believe and expect that God Himself has taken your seed and blessed it and gives it back to you so you can distribute it to those who have less. Believe that God is indeed able to make all grace overflow to you, and as this grace overflows and overtakes you, believe that you will have more than enough in all things at all times and that as a result you may overflow in every good work. Remember, if God can get money through you, he will get money to you. And if he can trust you with money, which he reckons the least of all things, there is nothing that he will not trust you with.
Let it be written of you -“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
May you see that the God who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness so that you will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.
