1Jn 4:15-19 ESV Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. (16) So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
(17) By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. (18) There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
(19) We love because he first loved us.
God’s love for mankind caused Him to sacrifice His Son Jesus Christ, to buy back men and women who had been condemned to everlasting destruction because of the sin of Adam and Eve. God made it simple. Believe that Jesus died for your sins, and you will live in God and God will live in you. We can know that God’s love is made perfect in us when we no longer need to live in fear of God’s judgment. We have this confidence when we truly believe that all the punishment for our sin was put on Jesus, and when God the Father sees us, He sees us in His Son Jesus, he sees us as he sees Jesus, perfect in every way. our spirits having been made perfect by the love of God. You see, fearing God has to do with punishment, but His perfect love in us is the one thing that drives fear out of us. If you fear God’s judgment and punishment, then you have not been made perfect in the love of God.
What causes us to lose our confidence in God. We have been born into God’s family so we should have nothing to fear.
Rom 8:15 ESV For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
The day you believed and invited Christ into your life, he put His spirit in you. His Spirit adopted you as a child of His, and by His Spirit you can call God your Father, your Daddy. So, if we have not received the spirit of slavery, why is it that we fall back into fear?
The answer is Satan. Anyone who believes that his is just some fictional character is deceived. Not only is he real, but he invades our lives every day with his lies and deceit. He was once described by Jesus as the father of all lies, and when he speaks, his speaks his native language - lies. Why does he bother, because it works, and he knows that his tactics have been working since he first lied to and deceived Eve in the garden? We are to be careful, and we are to pray so we wont fall into his traps.
1Pe 5:8-9 ESV Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (9) Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
He goes around like a roaring lion. He is not a roaring lion, but he behaves like one, he growls and roars his lies to try to put fear on you. However, you are to be to be watchful, to be on your guard. You are to resist him, standing firm in the faith, firmly trusting in Jesus to rescue you from the devil’s evil schemes.
Satan is constantly throwing his lies at us to fill our hearts with fear and worry. When we don’t believe, or we don’t fully understand the love our Heavenly Father has for us, we live our lives with a low-grade fear. Because we are not fully convinced of His love for us, we fear that something bad might happen in our lives.
Low-grade fear is not out and out terror, but it requires you to be on your guard, to be extra vigilant. You will find it lurking behind that hesitation you have to try something new, or the resistance you feel in pursuing your dream. That excuse you made to cover a failure. The compromise you made to win the approval of your friends or colleagues.
It’s rarely the big things, always the little ones. You may be late for an appointment, so you boot it down the road taking no heed of the speed limit, putting yourself or others in danger. You still arrive late for your appointment only to discover that you have to wait another ten minutes to be called. All that fear and panic for nothing.
I used to live in fear: Fear of what people thought of me, fear about my finances, fear of sickness, concerns for my family, fear of failure, fear of harm, even fear that people wouldn’t like me. The root of all my fears was that I wasn’t quite sure if God would really take care of the things that concerned me. I was unsure of His love for me. As I have learned to live in this love of God, my heart become free from fear. Yes, there are still times when I am tempted to be fearful, but now when an anxious feeling comes to my heart, I turn to Jesus and ask Him to show me the truth that will set my heart free. The anti-dote to lies and fear is truth and security. This is found only in Jesus and his teachings. We can only be free when we live in His truth. He is the one person who ever was ever heard to declare that he was the only way to God the Father, because he is the way, the truth and the life. He also said that those who follow him will be set free from deception and lies, if they will truly follow his teachings.
Joh 8:31-32 ESV So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, (32) and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Any time fear creeps in, I go to God and to His word and He is always faithful to remind me of His promise of freedom from fear, and as I receive His love for me, my heart is filled with peace. His perfect love sets my heart free from all fear every time I look to Him.
1Jn 4 16 ESV So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
This verse shows us that God is love. God’s perfect love and fear cannot remain in your heart at the same time. They cannot coexist. His perfect love casts out all your fears. Any time you experience a low grade-fear it’s because His love for you has not been established in your heart and you are believing something about God or yourself that is not true.
Fear is a wicked preservative. It seeks to preserve our safety at the expense of our strength and authenticity. Left unchecked it can fester until it robs our joy and leaves us frustrated. Once we recognise it, however, we can intentionally take steps to trust God with the adventure He calls us to and be rid of that headache of fear we’ve been carrying.
As you become conscious of your union with Jesus (that you are one with Him), and you fellowship with Him daily, you’ll find yourself living free from fear. Verse 17 says that it is through your union and communion with Him that love is brought to perfection in your heart.
1 Jn 4 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.
Your heart becomes established in His love as you live and abide in Him. You are not afraid of judgment. You can come before your Heavenly Father with confidence because your heart is established in the truth that you are just like Jesus in this world. You are the righteousness of God in Him.
We sang the song, “I’m no longer a slave to fear” We mustn’t just sing it, we must live it. Any time fear comes at your heart, allow the Holy Spirit to remind you that are not a fearful slave and that Jesus has set you free from the bondage of fear by making you a child of God. You can pray, “Father, I know You love me. I don’t have to be afraid. I am an heir to all of Your promises because of my union with Jesus.” In your union and communion with Him, His love is brought to perfection in your soul.
I love this promise in the Paul’s letter to the Romans –
Rom 8:38-39 ESV For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, (39) nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God’s perfect love is revealed to us in the promises we have been given in Jesus. Each promise is a treasure we have in Christ, a revelation of His love.
To sum up
You are in Christ if you believe he had forgiven you, if you have declared that Jesus is the Son of God, then –
God lives in you and you in God
The more you come to know and believe the love that God has for you, the more you will live your life free from fear, and the more you will realise that God is love.
When you live in the love of God you live in God and God lives in you.
This is how love is perfected in you, and when love is perfected in you there is no need to fear judgment.
The more you come to know and understand the love of God the more you will realise that there is no fear in love, because God’s perfect love drives fear away.
Fear has to do with punishment, but you have been spared from punishment, Christ taking your punishment instead. God sees you as he sees Jesus, free from all punishment.
You have no need to fear because you have been perfected in love, you love God because he loved you fist.
When you feel fear beginning to rise, go to God, talk to him, read his word, and allow his perfect love to drive that fear away
